AHCC and HPV: what the research can and cannot say

People searching for the best AHCC supplement for HPV are usually looking for a brand. The trials did not test these brands against each other.

Human papillomavirus is common, and most infections clear without a supplement. There is no dietary supplement approved to treat or cure HPV. Screening, follow-up of abnormal results, and vaccination are the tools public-health agencies actually recommend. This page is not a substitute for that care. Primary report: Smith and colleagues, Frontiers in Oncology, 2022.

The phase II trial

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (NCT02405533) enrolled 50 women over 30 with high-risk HPV that had already persisted for more than two years. Twenty-five were assigned to 3 grams of AHCC once a day on an empty stomach for six months, then placebo for six months. Twenty-five received placebo for twelve months. Forty-one participants completed the study.

  • 14 of 22 women in the AHCC arm (63.6%) were HPV RNA and DNA negative at six months.
  • 9 of those 14 (64.3%) were still negative six months after stopping AHCC. That is the figure the paper calls a durable response.
  • 2 of 19 women on placebo (10.5%) were negative at twelve months.
  • Of 12 placebo-arm participants who later took open-label AHCC for six months, 6 (50%) became negative.
  • Counting blinded and unblinded use, 34 people received AHCC and the paper reports an overall clearance rate of 58.8%.

The authors concluded that 3 grams once daily supported immune clearance of persistent HPV in that phase II setting and was well tolerated. They also wrote that the duration needed after the first negative test still needs more study. Shoppers comparing finished bottles can start with featured NovaHerbs AHCC on the comparison.

Earlier pilot numbers, kept separate

A 2019 paper from the same research group, “From Bench to Bedside,” reported lab and animal work plus two small pilots: 4 of 6 women cleared high-risk HPV after 3 to 6 months at 3 grams, and 4 of 9 cleared after about 7 months at 1 gram. Those are pilot counts, not the confirmatory trial.

What this does not establish

  • These pages compare retail bottles on label and price. They are not a medical ranking.
  • A 63.6% result is 14 people out of 22 in one arm. It is not a promise for the next shopper.
  • The studied dose was 3 grams a day. A capsule that says 500 mg does not become a 3 gram dose unless the serving math says so.
  • Men were not the enrolled population in this trial.
  • Clearing a research test is not the same as treating cell changes, and it does not replace screening.
